Certification Requirements
All Kentucky EMTs and Paramedics must be certified by the Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services (KBEMS) to perform their jobs. They also can choose to be certified through the National Registry, a nationally recognized certification agency.
Kentucky-certified EMTs and Paramedics are required to continue their education and update their licenses periodically. You can learn more about recertification:

EMT Recertification Requirements
Kentucky (Basic) Recertification
KBEMS requires 24 hours of continuing education every 2 years for EMT recertification (see below). At least 2 hours of HIV/AIDS training also are necessary.

The National Registry of EMTs requires 72 total hours of continuing education every 2 years. 24 of those hours must include the same topic areas as the KBEMS requirements, excluding HIV/AIDS. National Registry also requires an additional 48 CEU hours in the EMT's choice of subject areas, from topics addressed in the latest national EMT textbook.
Kentucky (Basic) Recertification
KBEMS requires 60 hours of continuing education every 2 years for Paramedic recertification. At least 2 hours of HIV/AIDS training also are necessary.
The National Registry of EMTs requires either a 48-hour refresher course or 48 hours in the subject areas listed below. The National Registry also requires an additional 24 CEU hours in the Paramedic's choice of subject areas, from topics addressed in the latest national Paramedic textbook.
